A varied cast of historical characters traveled through this undulating landscape of hills and valleys and left memoirs and drawings, illustrating the landscape and describing their encounters with early settlers and Native American sites. Some of these observers were geologists looking for minerals, other were surveyors working for the U.S. government, and still others were studying the traces of First People who lived here when the massive glaciers of the last Ice Age were retreating.

Murray, conservationist and former UW-Madison Arboretum Outreach and Education Manager, and Conn, author of “Juliette Kinzie: Frontier Storyteller” (whose 1830s Driftless travelogue will be included in this discussion) and former Aldo Leopold Center Director, will share snippets of these historic perspectives and related observations and interpretations. Their professional backgrounds, always intersecting and intertwined with the Wisconsin landscape, will lend context and insights. This online event is free, thanks to support provided by the Mount Horeb Community Foundation, but pre-registration by email is required. Participants may choose to join via weblink or call-in number.
