Hello all.
Russ has started something very important here. As he alludes, there are
services 'out there' but they typically charge high prices for
conversion work. I don't see his email address here, but I'm hoping he's
part of the uwec listserve and will see this, or that someone forwards
it in his direction. (thanks!)
I'm a board member and technology advisor for the McHenry County
Historical Society and Museum in Union, Illinois, (between Rockford and
Chicago), about 5.5 hours south of Russ in Cushing.
At our museum, I've just started setting up a small audio conversion lab
because our director found a number of oral history cassettes and some
1/4" reel-to-reel audio tapes in a drawer he hadn't looked in for a
number of years. I'm well versed with most types of technology and will
be glad to provide guidance and help at no cost (up to a point).
I'm a retired IT professional from the school library market. We were
early Apple and Windows developers, so I have Apple ][ and Macintosh
computers as well as some PCs, ranging back in age some 40 years. I also
have various audio and video cameras and decks. I'm also becoming active
in the southern Wisconsin local history community from a few aspects.
At this point, because of our distance apart, I'm not sure how we might
best work together, Russ, but I'm also interested in hearing from others
with similar interests, knowledge and available equipment.
