Subject: Latinx Milwaukee and Historic Preservation

We're excited to offer a Preservation Month program exploring preservation practices as they relate to sites of importance to Milwaukee's Latinx community. While it's focused on our city, it will be of interest to anyone interested in exploring the question of how traditional preservation practices do or do not serve diverse populations. Hope to see you there!
------ Historical landmarks abound across Milwaukee. While these sites recognize significant political, economic, and cultural turning points in the city's history, they do not often portray a complete portrait of the varied communities that have called Milwaukee home. We believe it's important to change that and ensure that the places that matter to ALL Milwaukeeans are valued and their stories preserved. Milwaukee Preservation Alliance is very pleased to welcome Marquette University Latinx Studies Professor Dr. Sergio Gonzรกlez to share some of the important stories of Latinx Milwaukee an d how we can work to ensure the benefits of historic preservation are accessible to all.

Latinxs, who have had a historical presence in the city for over one hundred years, now make up nearly 20% of Milwaukee residents. There are, however, no landmarks on the National or State Register of Historic Places commemorating Latinx history in the city. This presentation will discuss that historical omission, noting how the physical spaces that area residents, historians, and preservationists deem historically relevant in many ways dictate what and who our communities believe is worth remembering as part of our city's past.
