Kate,
I haven't been able to be very involved in SFPJ this year, (due mainly
to elder care issues) but I'd like to encourage SFPJ to put the campaign
against the proposed amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution that would
ban not only gay marriage, but anything "substantially similar,"
including civil unions and domestic partnership arrangements, a little
bit more in the forefront next fall. It looks like it could come to the
state ballot in Nov. 2006, so that leaves just a bit more than a year to
mobilize the friends and supporters of LGBT folks everywhere to get out
and help fight against this extremely harsh and discriminatory amendment
before Wisconsin passes a ban that most people, I am sure, will
eventually be ashamed of. We tried a town hall meeting last fall, but
the turnout was pretty pathetic. Thanks.

Subject: One last time?
Colleagues--
I'd like to suggest that we have one last meeting of the school year
before we disperse to the four directions for the summer. Just a little
meeting to discuss what we might like to do next year, perhaps to have a
little more time to think and plan. I'd mentioned to a few of you,
e.g., that I'd like us to consider an event (teach-in?
Mini-conference?) on media/media reform. With more lead time, we could
perhaps have more of a chance at getting a keynote speaker like Bob
McChesney. Others may have ideas for vital topics for our campus.
Who's up for meeting? Reply to the list or just to me and we'll get
things going.
Best regards to all here at the edge of chaos--
Kate

"In all lines of academic investigation it is of the utmost importance
that the investigator should be absolutely free to follow the

limitations which trammel inquiry elsewhere we believe the great state
University of Wisconsin should ever encourage that continual and
fearless sifting and winnowing by which alone the truth can be found."
