Colleagues,
While mulling over possibilities for SFPJ¹s contribution to the UWEC
community this year, an idea came to me that I want to run past you. I
welcome responses/discussion on the list serve, of course, and hope this
will also provide some material for next week¹s meeting.
Here goes:
SFPJ sponsors a series of talks throughout the academic year-- brownbag
luncheons? At these, a different speaker/speakers would be featured each
time but the continuing general topic would be "The World I'd Like To See,
and What We Need to Get There." Some might approach this from a
disciplinary perspective--say, an enlightened shift in economics, or an
environmentally conscientious approach to chemistry, that would make a
better world. Others might speak from community work they are invested in.
Perhaps SFPJ would want, sometimes, to co-sponsor one of these with anothe
r
organization or office on campus‹or from the Eau Claire community.
What I like about the idea is that it approaches problems positively; I als
o
like the fact that it would let so many different people speak to their
particular concerns and from their particular experiences and abilities.
Additionally, it would be less work all at once than a teach-in (not that
I¹m saying teach-ins are a bad idea!) AND would provide a regular infusion
of SFPJ¹s presence/ideas throughout the academic year.
Heck‹we could even use some of the goals of the baccalaureate degree to
focus!
Thanks for considering this.
In hope,
Kate
