Dear WIB,

Please see below a note I sent to the Leader Telegram this morning with the subject matter "Dump the Leader Telegram".

Dear Mr. Graaskamp,

Your "day before the election" decision to wrap our newspaper in colorful plastic advertising paid for by the National Rifle Association with the phrase "Dump Doyle" emblazoned across the front has moved me to DUMP your newspaper.

When I called to cancel, the person taking my call said that it was your policy to accept that kind of advertising the day before the election but the policy was changed the day of the election. What an amazing coincidence.

I am very interested to hear about the journalistic logic and ethical business decision process that prompted the change.

Apparently what they thought was acceptable the day before the election, they have since decided is not acceptable after.

My concern is at several levels:

1. The uncivil and disparaging term "DUMP" being used about another person, human, etc... with a picture of a dump truck to go with it.

2. The timing of the ad being literally at the eleventh hour of the campaign.

3. The sponsorship of the ad: The National Rifle Association" and "gun owners"; how many 10 and 12 year old newspaper carriers and kids bringing the paper in from the front step see that kind of colorful and deliberately eye-catching information to convey an uncivil and trashy message.

4. The LT editorial staff has written continuously about the low level of campaign mud slinging and name calling but the advertising dept. gets to accept the money for this same trash.

I hope others will do the same. They do not understand anything except the money side of it.
