Dear friends,
According to http://www.icasualties.org/, to date there have been 4,390
total U.S. military fatalities in Iraq and 1044 in Afghanistan. Who
knows how many are wounded and/or maimed for life - soldiers and civilians?
The Iraq war was commenced by our government illegally, and it does not
take a stretch of the imagination to think of it as a "war of
aggression". The U.S. government knew, or should have known at the time
it invaded Iraq, that Iraq had no WMD and no connection with al Qaeda or
the 9/11 attacks.
Regarding Afghanistan, in October 2001, the U.S. government refused to
consider or discuss offers by the Taliban to either try bin Laden
themselves including an offer to consider handing over bin Laden to a
third country, if the U.S. would provide evidence of bin Laden's guilt.
So many deaths and calamities could have been avoided had the U.S.
considered these offers.
To make matters worse, once the invasion of Afghanistan started, the
U.S. showed a remarkable lack of desire to capture bin Laden (our stated
goal). In the words of a Nov. 2009 U.S. Senate report:
"The decision not to deploy American forces to go after bin Laden or
block his escape was made by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and
his top commander, Gen. Tommy Franks, the architects of the
unconventional Afghan battle plan known as Operation Enduring Freedom."
