List Serve Members,
Again, there have been some good questions about deaccessiong artifacts
and it is helpful to share ideas and examples through the list serve.
However, this subject can be difficult to discuss in such a forum, it
can be fairly complex, depending on the circumstances, and each
museum/historical society involved in this list serve has different
circumstances, of course.
Ann Koski, Director of the State Historical Museum in Madison has
suggested that if people do want to discuss this in more detail, that
they contact her by phone. One question often leads to another, and Ann
and I often have people read an article or two first, then discuss
questions in more detail.
Ann has also suggested a few additional resources:
One of the best, and most easily readable chapters on Deaccessions and
Disposal is in the book: Things Great and Small: Collections
Management Policies by John E. Simmons (2006). It's published by AAM.
If one wants more technical jargon and a very good discussion of the
legalities, go to Marie Malaro's A Legal Primer on Managing Museum
Collections (second edition). www.aam-us.org
Both Ann and I are willing to discuss the issues further with you, here
is Ann's info. (Many thanks to her for agreeing to assist in this way!)
