The Winneconne Historical Society is sponsoring an exhibit of over
fifty original photographs from the Beatrice Tonnesen collection in
their holdings. Beatrice, a native of Winneconne, holds such accolades
as 'The first successful woman portrait photographer'; 'The first
photographer to use live models for advertising'; and a painter using
oil or watercolor. All of this in the years between 1890-1920, when it
was difficult to run a business of any kind. This exhibit provides a
glimpse into her life and business that she and her sister, Clara, had
on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Child models are especially eye
catching. Young women known as the Tonnesen Girls were beautifully
portrayed with filmy soft gowns and long beautiful tresses.
The exhibit is in the Steamboat House Museum, one of the five buildings
the Winneconne Historical Society has open every Sunday afternoon,
1:30-4:30 P.M. Free admission. Donations appreciated. Call
920-582-4539 for more information.
