Yup, Roger is correct, and you sometimes see the same container
without the spring loaded top, just a black screw on top.
This was the "spare".

My grandmother used to have a two-burner kerosene kitchen stove. Your glas
s container looks very much like the fuel reservoir that sat on the end of
the stove. The full glass container would be inverted into a metal holder;
the spring-loaded plunger on the cap would be forced up into the jar and f
uel would gravity feed into the stove line.
