Those who attended the conference may have seen Gorman & Company's presenta
tion on the Oregon High School rehabilitation project. We thought you might
be interested to know that last week at the National Preservation Conferen
ce, Gorman & Company received national recognition for the Fairbanks Flats
project in Beloit:
Gorman & Company has won the 2009 Housing and Urban Development Secretary's
Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. The award was accepted las
t Thursday by Gorman & Company at a ceremony conducted by the National Trus
t for Historic Preservation in Nashville, Tennessee.
Gorman & Company is a 25 year-old affordable housing development firm based
in Madison, Wisconsin. It also has offices in Milwaukee, Phoenix and Miam
i.
The Award was given for the preservation of the Historic Fairbanks Flats R
owhomes in Beloit, Wisconsin.
Fairbanks Flats is a unique, historic example of segregated, company-owned
housing. It was company housing built exclusively for African-American wor
kers. The concentration of these workers in the Flats was the genesis of B
eloit's African-American community. Built by the Fairbanks Morse Company,
the housing helped shape future settlement patterns.
"While we accepted the award, it is really an honor that belongs to the co
mmunity," said Tom Capp, Gorman & Company's Chief Operating Officer. "The
City of Beloit, the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (W
HEDA) and the Fairbanks Flats Revitalization Group were the driving forces
behind the project. In fact, it was Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle who asked
us to come down and make a difference in the community."
