EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
JOB SUMMARY:
The Executive Director of the Cedar Falls Historical Society is responsible
for the orderly and efficient operation of the Society’s museums and the
ir programs. The Executive Director works with the officers and members of
the Board of Directors in planning and directing the society and is respon
sible for keeping them well informed as to all activities of the Society, i
ts staff, and volunteers. This employee supervises all activities of the S
ociety, including the Wyth House, Victorian House, Ice House/ Behrens-Rapp
Gas Station, Little Red School museums. The Executive Director is also res
ponsible for planning and directing programs that fulfill the purpose of th
e Society.
In addition, the Executive Director is responsible for identifying financia
l aid programs and supervising grant applications. The Executive Director
will be informed about organizations and meetings that would benefit the So
ciety, its staff, Board members, and volunteers. The Executive Director wi
ll continue development of skills in the museum field (including in-service
training). The Executive Director will work with officers in setting up a
committee system for Society activities. In addition, the Executive Direc
tor will develop good public relations for the Society within the Black Haw
k County Area and engage in active Study of Cedar Falls history. The Execu
tive Director will also perform such other acts and duties as directed by t
he President of the Board to carry out the purposes of the Society.
REPORTS TO: The President of the Society’s Board of Directors
SUPERVISES: Employees, volunteers, and interns
Salary: 40,000+
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supervise paid and volunteer staff.
2. Develop annual budget in consultation with the Finance Committee an
d oversee the fiscal affairs of the Society.
3. Coordinate fund-raising activities, supervise grant writing for the
Society, and assist the Board in increasing the Society’s Endowment.
4. Keep Board, staff, and volunteers informed about the Society’s ac
tivities and policies.
5. Supervise maintenance and ensure that the Society’s museums are k
ept in an operational, presentable, and safe condition for the public.
6. Supervise research on Cedar Falls history; demonstrate familiarity
with printed and archival sources for local history.
7. Serve as the Society’s representative and spokesperson. Maintain
communications with public and private organizations throughout the region
to further the Society’s mission.
8. Supervise the proper care, storage, documentation, and usage of the
Society’s collections and archive
9. Coordinate and assist in activities of the various Society councils
and committees as well as subgroups and volunteers.
10. Recruit volunteers to meet the needs of the Society.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in history or related field. Experience with similar o
r related responsibilities is valued. Familiarity with and involvement in
the local community a plus. Needs to be experienced in computer and teleco
mmunications technology. Must have excellent oral and written communicatio
n skills and be able to work on multiple assignments simultaneously. This
position requires the ability to work well with the public, staff, Board, a
nd volunteers. Above all, it requires strong organizational skills and car
eful attention to detail. The Executive Director must be able to be cooper
ative and flexible enough to respond to challenges as well as to set priori
ties and complete tasks within the broad objectives as outlined by the Pres
ident and the Board.
