Sunday in the Cemetery – Living History Tour
June 28
Walnut Hill Cemetery in Baraboo will be the location for the Sunday in
the Cemetery – Living History Tour presented by the Sauk County
Historical Society on Sunday, June 28 at 2 p.m. Tour participants will
be guided through the cemetery to the graves of famous and ordinary
people and hear stories from costumed interpreters. This year’s
tour will celebrate the centennial of the Al. Ringling Theatre by
focusing on people related to or who worked for the Ringling family.
From the Ringling mausoleums to the pauper’s section of the
cemetery the stories of 10 people will come to life. Tour participants
will hear about the lives of Al. and Lou Ringling and their nephew Henry
E. Ringling as well as their cousin Charles Gollmar who survived one of
the worst circus train disasters in history and cousin Alma Waite who
gifted nearly three quarters of a million dollars to the city of
Baraboo. Other stops include Cynthia Owens an African American pioneer
with deep American roots, Charley Dietz, the unfortunate horse wrangler,
George Isenberg, the Ringlings’ favorite builder, trick rider
Elbridge Hocum, and boss hostler Charles Rooney. Tour tickets will be
sold the day of the tour at the cemetery and will be $8 per person.
