On Monday, October 23 at 6:30p.m. at the Mount Horeb Area Historical Societ
y’s new Driftless Historium (100 S 2nd St, Mount Horeb), Madision Police
Officer Corey Saffold will present “The Paradox of Being a Black Police O
fficer in Today's Society.”
Office Saffold will discuss his experiences as a Black policeman in the wak
e of multiple, highly publicized killings of unarmed African-Americans by p
olice officers—these shootings have intensified already strained relation
ships between the community and the police. He will address the paradox of
being a Black officer during a time when police are often viewed as an ene
my and are not trusted, especially among the African-American community. As
such, Officer Saffold will offer his strategy for engaging the community a
t large around these issues that have also affected him personally. Corey w
ill relay his personal experiences with law enforcement and how these exper
iences have helped to shape his approach to upholding the law throughout th
e city.
Officer Saffold is a law enforcement professional in Madison, and is known
in the community for his volunteerism and his work with youth of all ages a
nd demographic backgrounds.
“The Paradox of Being a Black Police Officer in Today’s Society” is
the fifth installment of the “Taboo Topics: Explorations of Uncomfortable
History” Speaker Series. This ongoing programming effort strives to inte
llectually and respectfully explore cultural and historical themes that are
generally misunderstood or misrepresented.
