Hello All – We get questions on “insurance” on a fairly regular basis. Like Karen mentions there are several different kinds of insurance coverage. If your current policy does NOT spell it out, you are probably not covered in that area.

I think it might be useful if future posts were to include who local groups insure with and what the cost for each type of coverage might be. People could then use that info to shop around for their best deal.

Also I’ll attached a pamphlet that is from 1987, but still provides a nice overview to the issue of insurance.

Best, Rick

The Eagle River Historical Society has explored the question with our carrier and another broker. We carry coverage for buildings, contents, event liability and D&O insurance. We cannot determine a way to establish value on our collections and the cost would likely exceed our means if we could. We have devoted our resources to risk management and care of the collection.

We do have coverage on all non collection display elements.

A question came up at a recent membership meeting and I volunteered to do some research on it. We own two buildings that house both our artifacts and archives. We carry both property and liability on the two buildings. The question that came up the other night was what do we have on the artifacts and archives? To my knowledge we don’t have any and probably could not get any. What do other societies do?
