Driftless Historium to Host Special 2019
Program and Exhibit Series,
“Immigrants of Wisconsin:
Yesterday and Today”
Immigrants and immigration might be a hot button issue—but it is nothing
new.
Throughout 2019, the Driftless Historium will explore the history and exper
iences of immigrants from across the world who have lived, loved and lost i
n Wisconsin, via a wide-ranging line-up of programs and exhibits.
This series, simply titled “Immigrants of Wisconsin: Yesterday and Today,
” will feature a mix of public offerings, spanning 19th century foreign-b
orn settlers to current immigration issues and experiences, with the consci
ous goal of helping audiences make connections and recognize patterns and c
hange over time.

Booked presenters include, among others, May 16th's historian Glenn Borreso
n on Norwegian “coffin ships" [more info coming your way very soon!], “
Making of Pioneer Wisconsin: Voices of Early Settlers” author Michael Ste
vens on Saturday, July 13, scholar Dr. Emily Anderson later that month on J
uly 18 with a look at global migration via a study of Laura Ingalls Wilder,
and Wisconsin Historical Society Reference Librarian Lori Bessler on Septe
mber 19 with tips and insights on “Immigrant Research.”

Two associated exhibits featuring profiles of Wisconsin-based immigrant fam
ilies (“Immigrant Journeys: ¡Llegué a Wisconsin!”) and recently na
turalized U.S. citizens (“Newest Americans: Citizens Reflect on What Amer
ica Means to Them”) are currently scheduled for residencies in the Driftl
ess Historium’s Special Exhibits Gallery.
In addition, the Historium’s Community Education Room will host a tempora
ry modern art exhibit, “No Man’s Land” by UW-Madison graduate art stu
dent Eva Gabriella Flynn – the daughter of a Mexican immigrant mother an
d a Homeland Security prosecutor father.
Finally, two video showings will use media to engage diverse audiences. On
June 22, the award-winning and timely documentary “Los Lecheros: Immigran
ts in Wisconsin’s Dairy Industry” will be accompanied by a professional
ly-facilitated reflective discussion and, on Saturday, September 14, young
attendees of an “American Tail” pizza and movie party will take home fa
mily discussion prompts.

The series debuted on Tuesday, April 30 with a living history performance p
rogram by Minnesota-based storyteller and children’s author Rose Arrowsmi
th DeCouix, who presented the true story of Swedish immigrant Delia Nilsson
in first-person character and costume to an enthralled crowd of children a
nd adults.
All public programs in this series will be free and open to all.

reb Community Foundation and their admirable goal to enrich the lives of Mo
unt Horeb area residents, with additional opportunities made possible throu
gh the Wisconsin Humanities Council and their “Working Lives Project: Sho
