Eye-To-Eye
You pitched a chance to share chit-chat
while we waited in separate chalk circles
for the grocery store to open, unknown
woman with a lavender cloth mask,
your eyes all I saw of your face, both
of us craving affirmation we existed
beyond the feedback received from rear-
view and bathroom mirrors. The masked
cashiers and other shoppers were not
neighbors, friends nor friends of friends –
but vectors capable of delivering weeks
of terror, months of debilitation, even
a potential death sentence.
Assume you are exposed every time
you leave your house
the mayor tells us, and so we fear faces
and the very air they expel, even the currents
in their wake, the invisible plumes of breath.
We made beelines for the bananas, the cereal
shelves, the cracker racks once doors were pushed
wide. I didn’t fully inhale till olly olly in free back
home again and wrist-deep in soapsuds wishing,
lavender woman, we could have shared our smiles.
