1 Sole vs. *Auxiliary Source*. First, did the newspaper give them to you
expecting your Society to be the sole source of them, or are the
newspaper and/or library keeping copies? If the former, you have no
choice unless you can talk the library into taking on that
responsibility. Everyone is short on space these days.
2. *USE of actual physical clippings* .Second, how, how often, and how
much do people use actual physical clippings in displays in your
museum? or searchers come to you looking for content on a specific
subject. (Want to look at how much attention the press has given a
specific person or business over the last 30 years}?
You may want to raise a question with those people in and out of your
society as to whether there are any subjects where they feel *actual
physical clippings* need to be kept. It is so much easier to keep
clippings
3. *How extensively do your Society and main users deal with
information?*Â Do they prepare stories either to tell or print or turn
into Power Point video clips? Prepare captions where they need dates or
how to spell names? (I find having a digital obituary file on my
computer very handy), It is easier to find information from clippings
that are in computer files and they take less space.Â
2. Are you likely to want to use the photos that are included in the
clippings? I recently put together a Power Point piece following up on
20 boys in a 1935 school photo with a page for each of them which gave
their name and dates, an enlarged individual photo of them from school
photo, the obituary, and other photos and clippings we had on file. Yes,
they were only a small part of the men and women from here who served in
WW II, but the photo did the selecting rather than one of us.
I work with our HS's image collection. After getting a very positive
response from an 1930 brides clippingphotos I had posted on our HS's
Facebook page, I am thinking of scanning the old Society Page clippings
we have and hunting our a few more,
Bottom line. I suggest that you divide your decision into parts. The
first one is the extent to which actual physical clippings or newspaper
photos will be used. The second one, is are there some priority areas
where your H So should be building a digital collections of clippings
over time.
