Subject: Great Fire of 1871 in the Belgian Settlements; Video and Speaker Availability

Greetings:

In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Great Fire of 1871, the Belgian Heritage Center in Brussels, Wisconsin commissioned a video to tell the story of the impact of the fire on the Belgian settlements in Brown, Door and Kewaunee counties. Much has been written about the effect of fires on October 8, 1871 in the Peshtigo and Chicago areas. The impact of the fire in the Belgian settlements has been somewhat overshadowed by the fires in more populated areas. The video explains the causes of the fire, the immediate impact on the Belgian settlers, and the transformation of the Belgian communities that occurred through rebuilding.

The goal in creating the video is to increase awareness of this tragic event and the remarkable story of the Belgian settlers’ rebuilding and resilience by making it available at no cost to nonprofits. The video has a run time of 26 minutes. In addition to the video, the Belgian Heritage Center will provide speakers either virtually or in person. We are also open to collaborating on a special event at our campus where your members and invitees can visit our museum exhibits and historic buildings situated in the Namur National Landmark Historic District.

If you are interested in using the video as part of your programming, we will make it available to you online through a private YouTube channel. Th e link provided will not contain comments or requests for donations. If you are interested in a speaker, we can provide additional information about the lives of the Belgian settlers, how they rebuilt their communities and their lasting impact on the community today. Additional information about the video and the fire are provided in the enclosed fact sheet. You can learn more about the Belgian Heritage Center at *belgianheritagecenter.org

If you are interested, please contact us for a viewing of the video and to learn more about what our speakers can cover. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity and look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
