Our lives move fast. We are increasingly detached from
the seeds, soil and landscapes that sustain us.
How do we reclaim these relationships? Why should we try?
The Mount Horeb Area Historical Society and Driftless Seed Project host celebrated writer, speaker and educator Diane Wilson for a discussion about our relationships over time with the foods that have sustained us and the landscapes that have nurtured us βusing corn, one of our closest seed relatives, as a case study.
She will follow its evolution from Native gardens to contemporary farming and the emergence of GMOs, including work being done by American Indian organizations to reclaim indigenous seeds as a community resource.
The topics in this presentation come from Wilsonβs essay, βSeeds for Seven Generations,β published in the 2016 Minnesota Historical Society Press anthology A Good Time for the Truth<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fus14.mailchimp.com%2Fmctx%2Fclicks%3Furl%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fshop.mnhs.org%252Fproducts%252Fgood-time-truth%26xid%3D548101586f%26uid%3D172589901%26iid%3De9b7b775a8%26pool%3Dcts%26v%3D2%26c%3D1675105508%26h%3Dfc0133e168e45a51ca8a1fd63a64c84bd34b17d4af1366e9cedc50f6701d9050&data=05%7C01%7C%7Caad4553f319a44a4d50008db0306a3d1%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C638107099352609597%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=RMNU7QG55nxDY%2FnQbo%2FO68ktOKCPnxsQ80F5goaeoYg%3D&reserved=0>.

About the event sponsors:
The Driftless Seed Project is a partner program of Mount Horeb Area Historical Society, Back Home Farm (Blue Mounds, WI), Mount Horeb Area Community Garden and Catherine Young. We seek to educate about seed collecting, horticulture and sustainable practices, and identify and share locally cultivated seeds and their stories from the Driftless area of Southwest Wisconsin. We believe a strong connection to the earth and food we eat is part of our Driftless history and must be part of our future.
